MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, HOUSTON: VIRTUAL LECTURE | ARTIST JULIE MEHRETU

An ongoing series at the museum brings MFAH curators together with artists who have contributed in putting together the inaugural installations and special commissions for the Nancy and Rich Kinder Building. In September’s virtual event, meet Julie Mehretu, who has been working in New York City and whose creations are layered with architectural, geographical and historical symbols informed by multiple sources including politics, literature and music. Her work, Fragment, created in Berlin is currently featured on the third floor of the Kinder Building.

ASIA SOCIETY TEXAS: ELECTRIFYING INDIA: A NIGHT WITH ABBY V AND KARMAGRAPHY

Attend an evening of electrifying Indian art that will feature music by the Toronto-based singer, songwriter and composer Abby V. Joining him at this concert is Karmagraphy, an entertainment company born in Los Angeles, which will bring to the stage some glorious Bollywood moves for a fun filled and entertaining autumn evening. Celebrate Indian culture and the power of art in building bridges between diverse peoples at this mesmerizing performance.

CONTEMPORARY ARTS MUSEUM HOUSTON: READING | WORDS & ART

Come and enjoy an evening of poetry and prose in which Houston-based authors and poets will read out and perform new works inspired by the museum’s ongoing exhibit, Cauleen Smith: We Already Have What We Need. If you have already viewed the exhibit and are an amateur writer, then you too can be featured in this event by writing something of your own and submitting it to the museum on or before 4 September! Take the budding writer in you to this event and show off your skills.

THE WOODLANDS CHILDREN’S MUSEUM: PIRATE ‘N MERMAID DAY READINGS

Saturday, the 18th is Pirate ‘n Mermaid Day and to mark this day, the museum will be hosting an interactive reading session with not one, but two stories! You’ll find your familiar Goldilocks here but with a twist: she will be underwater swimming around the coast of Okinawa in Japan. Then, you can read How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long which tells the story of a young boy who is invited out to sea with a crew of pirates. Set sail at this incredible story hour and travel through the imaginary worlds of the two fascinating creatures.

THE HOUSTON MUSEUM OF NATURAL SCIENCE: BODY WORLDS & THE CYCLE OF LIFE

During this docent led tour, you will be able to witness the inner workings of the human body, the effects of poor and good health and lifestyle choices on the physical self and understand life cycle through the lens of time. ASIA SOCIETY TEXAS: MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL 2021

Celebrate what is also known as the Moon Festival or Lantern Festival at this family friendly gathering that marks the autumn harvest and full moon night in Asian culture. Partake in the festivities by listening to live Taiwanese music, enjoy starry dance performances, some hit K-pop and Vietnamese storytelling. This is the place to be to dip into the vibrancy of Asian culture through some fun activities like lantern-making, calligraphy, paper-cutting and of course, spending quality time by the food stalls!

LAWNDALE ART CENTER: GOLD WAS MADE FA’ HER

This upcoming September exhibit is a visual poem dedicated to Black hood women in the South by artist Bria Lauren. The installations encompass the artist’s ongoing body of work in photography and community building. Bria was herself raised in Third Ward, Houston and highlights the lives of the women of this area to amplify their voices that have for long been impacted by structural inequities and respectability politics.

THE MENIL COLLECTION: NIKI DE SAINT PHALLE IN THE 1960S

A new exhibit coming up this September in Houston is perhaps the first to showcase the experimental works of the well-known French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle created during the most transformative decade of this artist’s career. In fact, the museum will be showcasing some of Saint Phalle’s works from her European collections in America for the very first time! The exhibit is bringing together the major paintings, assemblages, and sculptures made by this artist in the 1960s that would go on to affirm her a spot in postwar art history.
